A life with dementia>>
Urging OTs to take up the challenge to innovate in dementia care, Professor Jane Gilliard, social care lead to the older people’s mental health programme at the Department of Health, said that we ‘need to look at what is going well and spread that good practice’.

In the preliminary presentation to a discussion on the national dementia strategy Professor Gilliard said that there are 570,000 people with dementia in England, costing £17 billion, and the numbers look set to double in the next 30 years.

‘I am excited that dementia is the keynote address for the College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section – Older People’s annual conference,’ she said. ‘I’m used to it being tagged on at the end when most people have gone!’
Priorities for implementation include early diagnosis for all, implementing personal community support  and  also the  carers’ strategy.
