NHS White Paper promotes key role for AHPs - and major change in commissioning of OT services
The NHS White Paper, Equity and excellence: liberating the NHS, sets out the Government's long-term vision for the future of the NHS in England. It outlines plans to put the Allied Health Professions at the heart of 'an integrated and responsive NHS' which is more focused on better outcomes for patients and families. It specifies that:
  • AHPs will receive more freedom to innovate
  • More influence for AHPs in the running of organisations
  • AHPs to play a leading role in cutting readmissions
  • GP-led consortia to work more closely with AHPs
  • More trust in the judgment of AHPs to deliver optimal function

Occupational therapists will no longer be commissioned by Primary Care Trusts but by consortia of GPs and, when relevant, Local Authorities. OTs will have to promote the benefits of OT to new set of commissioners.
