Personal and Public Involvement (PPI)

Personal and Public Involvement is a legislative requirement for Health and Social Care organisations as laid down in the Health and Social Services (Reform) Northern Ireland Act 2009

Personal and Public Involvement (PPI) is about service users, carers and the public influencing the planning, commissioning and delivery of health and social care services in ways that are accessible and meaningful to them. PPI is also about involving local communities and the general population in issues of broad public interest, such as the location or nature of local services.

The Patient and Client Council was established under legislation on 1 April 2009 as part of the reform of Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland, replacing the health and social service councils. Their vision is for a health and social care service where the voice of patients, clients, carers and communities is heard and acted upon.  Also the 10 year strategy to protect and improve quality in health and social care in Northern Ireland Quality 2020 (Nov 2011) has a focus on care which is safe, effective and has a patient and client focus.

Why is Personal and Public Involvement (PPI) important?

PPI is core to the effective and efficient commissioning, design and delivery of health and social care services. It is intended to embed PPI into practice and culture so this will have implications for occupational therapy staff in carrying out their roles.
