There has been much focus on disability in public services and education during recent years, which has required higher education institutions to consider whether disabled students have access to a comparable learning experience with that of their peers.
Key publications that all HEIs should now be familiar with are: Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 ; DDA Part 4 or the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (SENDA) 2001 and QAA Code of Practice – Section 3 Students with Disabilities 1999.
The College of Occupational Therapists has recently published some Guidance on Disability and Learning. The aims of this document are to help interpret new disability legislation in respect of duties and responsibilities of education and placement providers, to offer some principles relating to disability and the student journey, and i ndicate ways in which an education and placement provider can make anticipatory and reasonable adjustments for disabled students.
