Highly commended: Wendy Daniels

Wendy DanielsFinalist Wendy Daniels was nominated by colleague Liz Woof in conjunction with the three year treatment of one particular client, Michael, a 23 year old man diagnosed with a bi-polar illness resulting in extremes of mood and finally the acceptance of an alcohol and drug problem.

Wendy had previously helped to update the Occupational Therapy Department at CMHT, Kingslea House, Manchester, encouraging mental health users such as Michael to gain confidence through a variety of skills such as art, computing, gardening, photography and sheltered employment. With Wendy's help, Michael discovered a genuine talent for art, even participating in a local art exhibition.

The eight months after Michael was discharged from the OT department were very difficult for him, but Wendy came to the rescue. Working closely with an employment officer at the Mental Health Employment Service she secured a work placement for Michael on a local Arts Project that helped grow his confidence to the point where he began a Foundation Art Course at University.

Again Michael suffered a small relapse but with Wendy's consistent support he spent the next few months developing his routine, daily living skills and coping strategies, and an understanding of his illness and medication.

Michael returned to University to begin an Art and Design Course which he is still completing. What's more, Michael's girlfriend has been so inspired by the role of Wendy that she has enrolled to become an Occupational Therapist!

Wendy, who works at CMHT, Kingslea House, Manchester is characteristically modest about her nomination, although obviously moved.

"I was delighted to be nominated and to be selected as one of the six finalists but nothing could give me more pleasure than knowing that I have helped a patient to work through their most difficult times. Michael should be very proud of what he has achieved."
