Occupational Therapy and Active Ageing:
Personal, Purposeful and Proactive

Annual Professional Development Event 2007
1st and 2nd November 2007
De Vere Belton Woods, Belton, Nr Grantham, Lincolnshire. NG32 2LN

The event theme: Active Ageing is not only about having an active physical life, but about the individual’s right to choice which affects all aspects of living - choices about where and who we live with; where and how we spend our money and time, and about enjoying the meaningful things in life. It’s about balance – not just between the things we do, but a balance between needs and wants as well as our likes and dislikes. So where is the need for meaningful doing? Where is the Occupational Therapy role in the ‘Active Ageing’ agenda?
Debate with us and amongst us, as we break the conventional boundaries and preconceived ideas of ageing.

There will be guest speakers together with paper presentations, workshops and posters delivered by members of the Specialist Section.

Annual Professional Development Event 2006

Independence, Well-being & Choice:
The Next Steps for OTOP

This stimulating event took place on Thursday 2nd - Friday 3rd November 2006 at De Vere Belton Woods, nr Grantham, Leicestershire  NG32 2LN

On the opening afternoon, after a welcome by Jennifer Wenborn, Chair of the Specialist Section - Older People, delegates were split into groups to take a ‘virtual bus journey’ to explore The future of older people’s services. The decision to make this ‘journey’ was as a result of a request from Professor Ian Philp to scope the progress we have made against the National Service Framework for Older People, and to identify the issues faced by occupational therapists working with older people arising out of The Next Steps document.
There was some excellent discussion on the themes of Dignity in care, Joined up Care and Healthy Ageing.

On the Friday, the full day of the event, we were delighted to welcome Julia Scott, Chief Executive of The College of Occupational Therapists, as the keynote speaker.

Julia was followed by really excellent paper and poster presentations from Specialist Section - Older People members, and ended with the launch of the Falls Management Guidance by Kate Robertson. The Annual General Meeting was also held.

The Specialist Section - Older People would like to thank the event sponsors:
Harcourt Assessment, Parkway Care, CosyFeet and Peta (UK).

Final thoughts - if you weren't able to attend this year, and were wondering if it would be a good idea to join us next time, this feedback and the accompanying photographs (277KB pdf) might well sway you!
