AMPUTEE REHABILITATION
History of the group
In 1988 the occupational therapists at Manchester D.S.C arranged one of the first residential courses to be run over five days, devoted to the 'Rehabilitation of the Upper Limb Amputee and Limb Deficient Child'.
This course was to form the base of what is today known as ULPOT (Upper limb prosthetic occupational therapists) as several participants forged informal links, and it was agreed that the group would meet on a twice yearly basis.
Following the success of ULPOT a lower limb prosthetic occupational therapy group was later formed in 1995 known as LLPOT .
Aims of the group
- To provide a forum for the exchange of information, ideas and developments within the area of upper and lower limb amputees and limb deficient children.
- To promote knowledge, skills and education through meetings and courses.
Communication
A register of therapists involved in this area of work has been drawn up: every therapist has a copy (this list is regularly updated as changes occur) and is able to make direct contact with colleagues as and when necessary.
Standards
A working party was set up in 1993 to investigate standard setting to try to develop a standardised approach to the treatment of upper and lower limb amputees and limb deficient children. We are currently working on updating these standards and initiating the implementation of outcome measures.
Meetings
Meetings are now attracting more than 20 therapists and the twice yearly meetings are divided into two days for ULPOT and LLPOT.
The day is usually divided into a business meeting in the morning followed by an information session in the afternoon.
This consists of case study presentations, invited speakers, demonstrations of both existing and new products and techniques.
Research and development projects are discussed, outcomes of trials made known and a general pooling of current information made available. MSc presentation by Marie Punchard: What is the experience of a child with a upper limb congenital limb deficiency and their parents in relation to the use/ non-use of a prosthesis? (253KB PowerPoint file)
The business meetings cover the progress of items such as the document on standard setting, forthcoming courses, updating staffing changes at D.S.C.s,and reading lists, etc.
The afternoon information session is open to all COTSSO members who may be interested in attending.
