North Region Study Day

“Responding to current health care needs?”

7th April, 2008

A study day was held at The Royal Oldham Hospital which was attended by 17 people in the North Region. As has become our pattern we had three speakers in the morning and one presentation in the afternoon followed by a chance to discuss the topic in greater detail in small groups.

The morning began with a presentation by Jo Goodwin, Advanced Practitioner at The Royal Oldham Hospital, who shared the results of her “Action Research into the assessment of falls in Accident and Emergency”. Jo began by explaining what Action Research entailed which many found very illuminating! She went on to point out the high numbers of fallers passing through A&E, and the huge numbers that fall at home but are not brought to the attention of professionals, and our responsibilities in light of the NICE guidelines and NSFs. She discussed the results of her research and the investigations which should take place routinely.

Sally Nicol shared about her work with the Department of Health with “Transforming Community Equipment”, as Oldham PCT is a lead partner in this project. She spoke about the aims of the Retail model, how the model was designed for the shadow run which is now taking place in Oldham and Chester, how it has been received by users, carers and staff so far and gave a progress report on how things have gone so far in the shadow run.

Kerry Sorby spoke about Outcome Measures and used the opportunity to ask the group to come up with suggestions of which Outcome Measures would be most appropriate for use in Acute settings from an Orthopaedic point of view, but that also could be used across specialities in preparation for SNOMED in the next two years.

After lunch Martha Entwistle updated us on the results of the # Neck of femur audit which took place across Greater Manchester and The Wirral. The results provoked much conversation about referral of this client group and the need to do Environmental Screens/Visits and/or Home Visits. Further work will be done on this subject , probably as part of the main audit in 2009, and we split into smaller groups to discuss what could be looked at in the next audit – what is the real information that we would like to get from an audit, and how is the best way to achieve that.

All participants felt that the day was useful, not only to hear the speakers but also to chat and network with other OTs. Another event will be planned for in October so watch this space for further details! If you haven’t yet made it to one of our study days please consider coming along – you will be made very, very welcome!

Report on Regional event

The North Regional Group had a really good meeting on April 23rd at The Royal Oldham Hospital. 22 people attended, travelling from Cumbria, Macclesfield and Liverpool, and everywhere within that radius!

The theme was "Developing evidence to inform your practice" and we were delighted to have three interesting speakers. Martha Entwhistle spoke about the Greater Manchester and Wirral neck of femur Audit; Kerry Sorby about her involvement in developing professional guidelines and Anna d'Agostino, representing Help the Aged, spoke about projects with Minority Ethnic Elders sharing Falls Prevention advice.

The afternoon was spent in buzz groups sharing about the challenges and opportunities facing OTs working within Orthopaedics and Trauma. All who attended felt that it was an informative and inspirational day.

The group plan another event in September and this will probably take place a little further North, in York, which we hope will encourage attendance from some of our other members. Watch out for more details on the website and don't miss the opportunity to get together with other OTs facing the same challenges and to keep up to date with innovative practice.

All newcomers will be made very welcome but book early to avoid disappointment!
