Strategic Plan 2008-2013

Meeting members' needs and championing the profession

The Strategic Plan for the British Association and College of Occupational Therapists (BAOT/COT) covering the period from October 2008 to September 2013 contains three themes that will help to guide and shape the profession and the organisation over the next five years:

  • supporting members
  • providing leadership and increasing the profile of the profession
  • sustaining the organisation

The Plan takes into account the many changes within health and social care, as well as the challenges resulting from devolution within the United Kingdom. Whilst the majority of our members work within the NHS and social care sectors, the Plan recognises that new employment opportunities are emerging for occupational therapy staff. It sets objectives for the organisation to help support members in delivering effective solutions that are recognised by employers as essential for providing quality services.

We have identified those activities that only BAOT/COT can do - and we will focus our efforts on them to maximise our effectiveness and to support the development of the profession

These activities are primarily:

  • continuously developing the profession’s philosophy, knowledge, skills, research-base and practice;
  • providing a distinctive and authoritative voice for the profession throughout the United Kingdom;
  • supporting the development of the evidence-base and disseminating research findings to demonstrate the value and effectiveness of occupational therapy to service users and stakeholders;
  • advising governments, business and industry in the UK and internationally to ensure that occupational therapy is central to the delivery of health and social care;
  • supporting all members in their practice and development to optimise their performance and competence for the benefit of service users and employers;
  • setting pre-registration standards for College-accredited occupational therapy education programmes;
  • providing industrial relations services that meet the needs of occupational therapy staff.
